The Trinity B1 English Test (ISE I) is a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). This full-day, 4-skills exam assesses reading, writing, speaking, and listening and is required for visa applications such as:

Passing the B1 ISE, I demonstrate that I can communicate confidently in work, study, and everyday situations, understand written and spoken English, and produce clear written texts.

About the Exam

Reading & Writing (2 hours)

  1. Long Reading Task: Read a single text and answer 15 questions (topics include public figures, early memories, world of work)
  2. Multi-Text Reading Task: Read four texts and answer 15 questions (topics include education, personal values, national customs)
  3. Reading into Writing Task: Produce a short piece of writing based on the multi-text task
  4. Extended Writing Task: Produce a longer response on general topics (e.g., society, pollution, urban vs rural life)

Speaking & Listening (20 minutes)

  1. Topic Discussion (4 mins): Choose a topic in advance, bring notes/diagram/mind map, and discuss with the examiner
  2. Collaborative Task (4 mins): Respond to a prompt, initiate and maintain interaction with the examiner
  3. Conversation Task (2 mins): Short conversation on a subject chosen by the examiner
  4. Independent Listening (10 mins): Listen to two recordings, answer questions; recordings are played twice, note-taking optional

  • Speaking & Listening: Remote Trinity examiner via video conference
  • Reading & Writing: In-person with other candidates

How to Prepare for the B1 ISE I Test
