Hamlets Desk :The UK Home Office has published updated Skilled Worker caseworker guidance on 11 May 2026, introducing important changes to the English language requirements for Skilled Worker visa applicants and settlement (ILR) applicants.

According to the updated guidance, applicants under the Skilled Worker route must now meet English language requirements in all four components of language ability: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.

Skilled Worker Visa Applications

Under the updated rules:

  • Applicants applying before 8 January 2026, or those whose most recent Skilled Worker permission was granted under the previous rules, must meet English language requirements at CEFR Level B1.
  • Applicants applying on or after 8 January 2026, whose most recent grant was not under the earlier B1 Skilled Worker requirement, must demonstrate English language ability at CEFR Level B2.

The guidance also confirms that applicants must satisfy paragraphs SW 7.1 to SW 7.3 of the Immigration Rules and demonstrate competence in all four language skills.

Skilled Worker Settlement (ILR) Applications

A major change also applies to settlement applications.

For any Skilled Worker settlement application submitted on or after 26 March 2027, applicants will be required to demonstrate CEFR Level B2 English language ability in Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening through an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) provider.

This means Skilled Worker settlement applicants must provide evidence of full English language proficiency across all four components.

Difference Between Skilled Worker and Family Visa Settlement Routes

The updated Skilled Worker guidance differs significantly from the English language requirements under the Family Visa settlement route governed by Appendix KoLL.

Under Appendix KoLL, applicants are only required to pass the Speaking and Listening components of an approved English language test.

  • Applications submitted before 26 March 2027 require a minimum of B1 Speaking and Listening.
  • Applications submitted on or after 26 March 2027 require a minimum of B2 Speaking and Listening.

Importantly, Reading and Writing are not required under the Family Visa settlement route.
