For thousands of people living in the United Kingdom with their husband, wife, civil partner or family, passing an approved English language test is an important milestone on the journey towards extending their stay in the UK.
One of the most widely recognised qualifications for this purpose is the A1 Secure English Language Test (SELT). If you are applying for Further Leave to Remain (FLR) under the family route, you may be required to demonstrate your English language ability by passing a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) approved English language test.
To help learners prepare with confidence, Hamlets Training Centre has been delivering specialist SELT preparation courses since 2011, supporting thousands of learners from across the UK through classroom and online training.
What is the A1 SELT?
The A1 Secure English Language Test (SELT) is an English language examination approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for certain visa and immigration applications.
One of the most popular A1 qualifications is the Trinity College London GESE Grade 2 examination, which assesses Speaking and Listening skills only.
Unlike traditional written English examinations, the Trinity GESE Grade 2 test is designed to assess your ability to communicate confidently in everyday situations. The examination is conducted as a friendly one-to-one conversation with a Trinity examiner and normally lasts around six minutes.
Candidates are asked simple questions about familiar topics such as:
- Personal information
- Family
- Home
- Work or study
- Daily routines
- Hobbies and interests
- Shopping
- Free time
- Likes and dislikes
The examiner is not looking for perfect English. Instead, they want to see that you can understand questions and respond naturally using simple English.
Who Needs an A1 English Test?
The A1 SELT is commonly required for people applying for:
- Further Leave to Remain (FLR) as a Family Partner
- Further Leave to Remain (FLR) as a Family Parent
- Certain Family Visa applications
- Other immigration routes where UKVI specifies an A1 English language requirement
Applicants should always check the latest UKVI guidance before making an application, as immigration requirements may change.
What Does A1 Level Mean?
The A1 qualification corresponds to the first level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
At this level, learners should be able to:
- Introduce themselves confidently
- Answer basic personal questions
- Ask simple questions
- Understand everyday expressions
- Communicate in familiar situations
- Use simple vocabulary and short sentences
A1 is intended for beginners and focuses on practical communication rather than academic English.
What Happens During the Trinity GESE Grade 2 Test?
The examination is relaxed and conversational.
Your examiner may ask questions such as:
- What is your name?
- Where do you live?
- Tell me about your family.
- What do you do every day?
- What do you enjoy doing?
- Describe your home.
- What did you do yesterday?
- What are your plans for tomorrow?
There are no written papers, no reading tasks and no listening recordings. The assessment is based entirely on your ability to communicate through speaking and listening.
Why Many Candidates Choose to Prepare Before the Exam
Although the A1 examination is aimed at beginners, many candidates understandably feel nervous about speaking English with an examiner.
A preparation course helps learners to:
- understand the examination format
- improve pronunciation
- increase confidence
- expand everyday vocabulary
- practise common Trinity questions
- receive feedback from experienced tutors
- reduce anxiety before the examination
Confidence is often the key to success.
