The GOV.UK SELT guidance was updated on 28 August 2026, so applicants should always check the latest government information before booking a test.
Important
A general English course or qualification is not automatically a Home Office-approved SELT.
If your immigration application requires a SELT, you must take an approved test, at an approved test location, at the required level.
Choosing the correct test is therefore extremely important.
What Is a Trinity SELT?
SELT means Secure English Language Test.
Trinity College London is one of the providers approved to deliver SELTs in the UK. GOV.UK currently lists Trinity College London among the approved UK SELT providers.
Trinity offers two main SELT formats:
GESE – Graded Examinations in Spoken English
GESE assesses:
- Speaking
- Listening
For SELT purposes, Trinity offers:
- GESE Grade 2 – A1
- GESE Grade 3 – A2
- GESE Grade 5 – B1
ISE – Integrated Skills in English

Which Trinity SELT Might You Need?
There is no single English test for everyone.
Your required CEFR level and test type depend on the immigration route.
For example, Trinity currently describes:

Life in the UK Test
The Life in the UK Test is an important requirement for many people applying for British citizenship or settlement.
The official GOV.UK service confirms that the test is used as part of applications for British citizenship or settlement in relevant circumstances.
The test currently consists of:
- 24 questions
- 45 minutes
- Questions based on the official Guide for New Residents
- 75% pass mark
- At least 18 correct answers out of 24 are required to pass
The current official booking fee is £50, and the test must be booked online at least 3 days in advance.
