You may need to pass the B2 SELT English Test if you are applying for:

  • Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

  • Settlement / Permanent Residency

From 26 March 2027, applicants for these routes will be required to demonstrate B2 level English proficiency.
Passing the exam shows that you can communicate confidently in everyday, social, and professional environments.

About the Exam

The B2 GESE Grade 7 exam is a 15-minute speaking and listening test approved by the UK Home Office.

It is part of the Secure English Language Test (SELT) system used for immigration applications.

The test checks your ability to communicate clearly and confidently in everyday situations such as work, travel, and social conversations.

Exam Type: Speaking & Listening

Format: One-to-one conversation with an examiner

Examiner: Remote Trinity examiner via secure video link

Duration: Approximately 15 minutes

Exam Structure

    Introduction
    Identity verification and basic personal questions

    Conversation
    Choose a topic to prepare in advance; complete a Topic Form and bring it to the exam

    Topic Discussion
    Short conversation on two subject areas chosen by the examiner

Assessment Criteria

Understanding B2 Level English

The B2 level is part of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

At B2 level you can:

  • Understand the main ideas of complex conversations
  • Communicate with native speakers with good fluency
  • Give detailed explanations of opinions and ideas
  • Discuss advantages and disadvantages of different viewpoints
  • Participate actively in discussions

Trinity GESE Grade 7 Exam Structure

The exam has three parts:

  1. Topic Discussion

You prepare a topic before the exam and complete a Topic Form.
You will discuss this topic with the examiner.

  1. Interactive Task

The examiner presents a situation or problem.
You respond by asking questions, giving opinions, and discussing solutions.

  1. Conversation

A short discussion with the examiner on two subject areas chosen by the examiner.

Communication Skills
Vocabulary, grammar, and clarity of expression.

Interactive Skills
Your ability to respond naturally and maintain a conversation.

Language Functions
Giving information, asking questions, and expressing opinions.
