Frequently Asked Questions

Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) assess English Language ability and are taken under specific secure conditions. Trinity SELTs are approved by UKVI, part of the Home Office, for Leave to Remain, British Citizenship (Naturalisation) and Tier 1, 2 and 4 visa categories where evidence of English language ability is a requirement.

Following a procurement exercise by the UK Government, Trinity is one of only two providers that have been approved to provide Secure English Language Tests for UKVI. This change took effect on 6 April 2015.

The Trinity exams offered for SELT purposes are:

  • Graded Examinations in Spoken English (GESE) – A1, A2 and B1 tests
  • Integrated Skills in English (ISE) – B1, B2 and C1 tests

The level and type of the exam you need to take is determined by the type of visa you require. Visit the Trinity UK visa test pages for more information.

More information can be found about the individual examinations via the Trinity UK visa test pages. Everyone who is required to take a four skills test will need to take Trinity SELT ISE based on the revised ISE exams published in February 2015.

For each type of visa application, you need to take a specific test. Follow the links on this page for your test, and then choose ‘Prepare for your exam’.

Trinity’s SELT exams are available at test centres across the UK. These are located in London Croydon, London Holborn, London Hammersmith, Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester and Peterborough.
